My family adventure to the Maui Ocean Center was a must see for relatives that were visiting from Oahu. As Hawaii residents, there were not strangers to beautiful sea life. However, I feel the Maui Ocean Center is a top notch aquarium that would not fail to impress.
Our family had to experience and immerse themselves in all that makes the Maui Ocean Center the ultimate fun family destination.
As we entered the center, my family and I were welcomed by a photographer who snapped a photo of us. (We had the option to purchase the photo.) Once our photo was finished we were given a map of all the different sections of the Maui Ocean Center.
The Aquarium
Maui Ocean Center did not fail to impress. The aquarium has a wide variety of sea life with tropical fishes, sea coral and etc. The Maui Ocean Center boasts one of the largest collections of live coral, a virtual whale encounter in the Humpbacks of Hawai‘i Exhibit & Sphere, 20 daily presentations, outdoor tide pools, and a 750,000-gallon Open Ocean exhibit with a 240-degree view acrylic tunnel. There was so much for our family to see.
The first thing that caught my eye was the tunnel. The minute we walked in to the sight of the largest stingray I had every seen. You would likely see me run or swim in the other direction if there was not a glass wall between us.
Next, the main tank of the aquarium has a large tank that is filled with large Hawaiian sea life which includes sharks, Uluas, manta rays, and eagle rays. It was interesting see such sea life along side smaller sized reef fish. This tank was my favorite part of the aquarium. Looking into it you can see some of Hawaii’s most beautiful and rare fish. Next, we saw two scuba divers swim into the tank. Their intentions were to feed the sea life of the tank. I watched the divers feed the rays, giant fish, and even the sharks. We had an up close view of watching these giant sea creatures eat. At one point I had felt a sense of concern for the divers.
Conclusion
The Maui Ocean Center was truly a one of a kind experience. So, if you’re looking for something that your family will enjoy, or would simply like to learn a little more about the marine environment of the islands then the aquarium is a great way to spend the day.
Have you ever been to the Maui Ocean Center? How would you compare your experience there to other aquariums?
